How your time zone is detected

Operating systems store your time zone as an IANA identifier — a name like America/New_York or Europe/Berlin — and browsers expose it to any page that asks. That identifier is what the box above reports. It is not your location: it is the rule your computer follows to turn the clock inside it into the time on your screen.

The identifier matters more than the abbreviation. Abbreviations are ambiguous and seasonal — America/New_York is EST in winter and EDT in summer, and CST means one thing in Chicago and another in Shanghai. The IANA name is unambiguous and carries the full history of clock changes for that region, which is why every page on this site is built on it.

If the detected zone is wrong, your device's clock setting is wrong. On Windows, check Settings → Time & language → Date & time; on macOS, System Settings → General → Date & Time; on Android and iOS, look under Date & time in the system settings. A VPN does not change it — the setting is local to your device.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell what time zone I am in?
The quickest way is to let the browser answer, as the box on this page does. To check it yourself, open your device's date and time settings — the zone is listed there by name. If you only know your UTC offset, note that an offset alone does not identify a zone: UTC−05:00 is shared in winter by New York, Toronto, Bogotá and Lima, and those places do not all change their clocks together.
Am I in Eastern time or Pacific time?
In the United States, Eastern covers the east coast down to Florida and west to Michigan and Indiana; Pacific covers California, Washington, Oregon and most of Nevada. Between them sit Central and Mountain. The gap between Eastern and Pacific is three hours, with Pacific behind. If you are unsure, the detected zone above resolves it — America/New_York is Eastern, America/Los_Angeles is Pacific.
Does this page use my location?
No. It reads the time zone setting your device already stores and never requests location access. Nothing is sent anywhere — the detection happens in your browser.
Why does my time zone abbreviation change during the year?
Because most zones have two: a standard one and a daylight saving one. New York is EST from early November to mid-March and EDT the rest of the year, and the UTC offset moves from −05:00 to −04:00 with it. The IANA name stays the same through both.
